Country Club Wedding in the Mountains of PA
It was a very hot 97 degree afternoon, when high school sweethearts Elizabeth & Dustin said “I do” in Scranton, PA. It’s actually a crazy story how we came to be here, 3 hours from where we usually do weddings in the Fingerlakes of Upstate New York.
In the fall of 2018, Sara got a phone call from Elizabeth’s mother, Jennifer. She had gotten our information from Mark’s mom, Donnette. Over 30 years ago these two mothers were once Girl Scouts on a trail trip where they had met, and stayed pen pals from miles away for over 30 years. For the first time since they had done this hike as little girls they were meeting 1/2 way to catch up on life, and have a lunch in Corning, NY. While at this lunch, Jennifer was so excited to share the news that her daughter was engaged and to be married! Donnette couldn’t wait to share that her son is in fact in the wedding business and does video. So, here we were over 30 years later capturing a wedding of Mark’s mothers childhood friend, and we had a total blast. We came in the night before, enjoyed some local eats and even spontaneously went to a parking lot carnival (that didn’t fare well with Mark & Jen, but that’s a story for another day) Their family was so loving and welcoming and it was our total honor to be able to capture their day in photo and film and they wanted us to travel to be there for them.
We began our day with Dustin at his childhood home, where he and his 7 groomsmen were just relaxing on the backyard deck. Beers in hand, sunglasses and doing the best they could to keep cool before they stepped into their custom tuxedos.
From the custom hand made bow ties that Dustin & Elizabeth got for both their Dads, and the custom handmade suits made by their Grandfather, it was just one of the few family touches they had throughout the day.
From there we headed to the home that Elizabeth grew up in with her brothers only a few blocks away. The girls were laughing and relaxed enjoying their time together. None of the bridesmaids, (just the maid of honor) had seen her wedding dress. She was so excited to do a big reveal once she was in the dress. We were careful to keep the dress hidden in her parents bedroom as we worked on details. She chose a beautiful classic white dress, and cathedral long veil. Once she was ready to get in her attire, her mom helped her get into her dress and shoes, standing and looking out the window of her childhood home, only a few hours before a new chapter in her life was beginning.
She was finally ready to reveal her full bride look to her girls. Sara arranged them right at the bottom of the stairs, eyes closed as Elizabeth walked down the hallway, and down the stairs. When she was ready she had them open their eyes, and it was one of the best reactions ever! They all smiled, cried, and laughed at how beautiful their friend was in her wedding dress. This whole time we had been hiding her dad, Dr. Gallagher so that she could do a special first look with him. She stood there surrounded by her bridal party as Dad stood there with his back to her, waiting to see his only daughter in her wedding gown.
It was finally time! They all packed into a trolley (yep I said that right, a trolley! How cool is that!) and headed to the church that Elizabeth grew up in where she would marry her best friend.
At the Nativity of our Lord Parish, a gorgeous stained glass, tall ceiling church surrounded by their family and friends the large church was packed waiting to see Elizabeth walk down the aisle to her groom. The doors opened and in she walked in arm in her Dad’s arm down to the front of the church to meet Dustin. His eyes lit up and gleamed as he saw his bride for the first time on their wedding day. Her wedding train and veil was a scene to behold as she gracefully walked down the aisle, reminiscent of Maria in the Sound of Music. A traditional Catholic ceremony, with readings by family and friends, a unity candle, an emotional exchange of vows, and a prayer over the newlyweds. Finally the wonderful couple were able to kiss for the first time as husband and wife.
From the church, the bridal party piled into the trolley and we were off to Lake Scranton to take some pictures, and were able to get the most beautiful drone shots. Living in the Fingerlakes, we sometimes forget to see the beauty surrounding us. Pennsylvania is filled with gorgeous hills and mountains, and Scranton, is absolutely beautiful. Surrounded by tall green mountains, and Lake Scranton is one of the most beautiful places we’ve been blessed to travel to. We were so excited to capture these images there of the newly married couple and their bridal party.
Do you see the inscription on Dustin’s suit?!?! It says D’Angelo’s because ALL of the men’s suits were tailored by his Grandfather at his tailor shop located right in Scranton, PA.
Next, we headed to the Glenmaura Country Club where the reception was being held to make sure we got some pictures on the green, since they both love to golf, we even brought along Elizabeth’s fathers clubs along to get some shots of them golfing at one of their favorite holes. We all paired up and got in the golf carts to trek on over to hole 19, but not until we got some fun pics on the trolley!
On the way back from the golf course we could feel a storm was a-brewing. The entire afternoon it had been over 90 degrees with no breeze, and there was a strong breeze and that right before rain feeling was there. We knew our time was limited, so we grabbed the bride and groom to take a few pictures right outside the venue before the storm hit (you can see the storm clouds in the background) As soon as we got our last shot and rushed them back in, as they walked through the doors to the club, the skies opened and the rain poured. It helped cool the temperature down just a little bit, but then the mugginess hit a little later.
I mean….just look at that absolutely beautiful veil! I mean we helped it a little but the wind was strong and just held it there!
The reception was held in a beautiful tent outside of the club, full of their white and black accents. Tall vases filled with beautiful white flowers, and the ceiling had beautiful chandeliers hanging down.
Another family touch was their cake topper. This topper not only was on their cake, but also on Elizabeth’s parents and grandparents caked. Passed on from generation to generation it fit perfectly atop their classic white 3 tiered cake, surrounded by pictures of his and hers family on their wedding day.
From the cocktail hour inside the club, the guests were ushered into the tent, and riled up to be greeted by an incredible band, playing everything to classics to Michael Jackson to Top 40 Radio hits.
The MC got everyone seated just for them to stand back up for the grand introduction of our bridal party, right into the Elizabeth and Dustin’s first dance as husband and wife. The best man then gave a hilarious speed followed by a heart felt toast from the maid of honor. And, wallah! Our guests were served a delicious, plated dinner from the wonderful country club staff.
Just when it seemed our tummies couldn’t get any more full, dinner was then complimented by a delicious wedding cake, right as the sun was setting.
There couldn’t have been a perfect ending to the wedding day plans for both Elizabeth & Dustin to share a dance with their parents, two incredible couples who they modeled their relationship and marriage after. Many tears were shed, and kisses shared.
Thank you so much for entrusting us to capture your special day! We had so much road-tripping down to PA to spend the weekend celebrating you.
While their full highlight film is still in making, you can watch a video preview of their day, linked below!
We hope you two are enjoying your European honeymoon! Have so much fun, and safe travels. See you soon!
